Die Gezeichneten, premiered to huge acclaim in 1918, is one of the most characteristic works of a composer who was to fall victim to political and musical developments in the 1920s and 30s. Schreker's opulent, late-Romantic score provides the perfect vehicle for the opera's fin-de-siècle subject - 'the tragedy of the ugly man', derived from a story by Oscar Wilde and freely interpreted within an idealistic Renaissance setting. This is the first complete studio recording of the opera.
